Don’t jump to Macericks!

We’ve received many calls inquiring about the new version of Apple MacOS, 10.9 Mavericks. Your Mac computers may automatically offer to install the upgrade. This may be extremely tempting especially because, for the first time ever, the upgrade is free. However, the decision to upgrade operating system software must be made with due consideration of the compatibility of all the applications.

In order to ensure that your productivity is not interrupted, we strongly encourage you to avoid the Mavericks upgrade until we can work with you to ensure that your environment is completely compatible. Below we have listed applications in two groups; those will not work under Mavericks, and probably never will as the developers’ don’t have any plans to update them, and those that don’t work now, but are reportedly being updated by the developer’s for compatibility. Please keep in mind that if you upgrade and run into an application that you need regularly that is not compatible, the only option will be to completely erase and rebuild your computer (after backing up your data). Obviously that is expensive in both time and energy and therefore best avoided!

Applications known to not work at this time

  • FileMaker Pro 11
  • VMware Fusion 4 and 5
  • Kaspersky Internet Security
  • Parallels 7
  • Kerio Workspace
  • Daylite 3.x
  • Extensis Portfolio Client

Applications that require testing and/or upgrades before they are compatible:

  • Sophos SafeGuard
  • CrashPlan Pro
  • Sophos Anti-Virus
  • FileMaker Pro 12
  • Adobe After Effects CC and CS6
  • Quickbooks for Mac
  • Daylite 4
  • Parallels 8
  • SugarSync
  • Suitcase Fusion
  • Extensis Universal Type Client
  • Extensis Portfolio Server
  • Kerio Connect mail client auto-configuration
  • Kerio Control VPN
  • VPN Tracker

The key takeaway is this is always a contextual decision. There is no “right time” to upgrade. It always depends on your needs, your environment, and your level tolerance for a few bumps along the way!
