Case Study: macOS MDM Migration
Executive Summary
A geographically dispersed accounting firm with approximately 25 end users engaged Second Son Consulting during new client onboarding to establish a more predictable macOS management model. The project focused on migrating devices into a new MDM environment, aligning configurations with Apple platform best practices, and standardizing macOS and third-party application update cadences. The migration completed in under three weeks without end-user disruption or increased support volume.
All the Details
Challenge
As part of onboarding, SSC was asked to implement a new macOS MDM environment that reflected recommended management standards while accounting for the client’s existing deployment and active users. The client wanted greater predictability in macOS management, particularly around operating system and third-party application updates, without impacting day-to-day work.
Approach
SSC designed the new MDM environment to align with Apple platform security standards and management practices. Configurations were tailored to the client’s workflows to minimize disruption during the migration window and avoid introducing new friction after completion.
SSC worked closely with client decision-makers to review current configurations, confirm requirements, and sequence changes in a controlled manner. This planning enabled a staged rollout, early validation with test users, and refinement prior to full deployment.
Options Considered
SSC presented two migration paths. One option was a user-driven approach supported by preparation guides and documentation. The second option involved scheduled, technician-assisted sessions to guide each user through the migration and confirm successful completion.
The client selected the technician-assisted approach to reduce risk and ensure consistent outcomes. SSC used a scheduling platform that allowed users to select convenient times, and trained technicians conducted the migrations in coordinated waves over a two-week period.
Solution Details
SSC used an in-house macOS MDM migration tool to manage the transition from the prior management service to the new environment. During each migration session, the tool provided real-time visibility into each step, indicating progress and whether individual actions succeeded or failed.
Migration status and logging were visible to both technicians and users during appointments, supporting transparency while primarily enabling technical validation and troubleshooting. Test users were migrated first, feedback was incorporated, and adjustments were made before expanding to the full user population.
As part of the migration, SSC automated nearly the entire macOS workstation build process, converting a previously manual workflow into a repeatable and auditable setup. This improved consistency for new device onboarding without requiring changes to user behavior.
Results
SSC completed the macOS MDM migration in under three weeks, including time allocated for testing and refinement. The client now operates with a more predictable macOS management model, consistent enforcement of security settings, improved visibility into device state, and standardized update cadences.
The migration completed without end-user disruption and did not result in an increase in helpdesk tickets. Ongoing macOS onboarding is now more consistent and requires less manual effort, supporting long-term operational stability.
